Joseph Scattergood was a prominent Quaker, born in 1808 to James and Ann Scattergood of Philadelphia. He was interested in the history of conscientious objection, did work for native American groups in New York State, and started a fund which helped to establish a boarding school, Scattergood Seminary, in 1890.
